How to Find Clients

The question I have been asked the most during my time as a business owner is how do I find clients? I’ve been asked that question since day one and the idea of getting clients, let alone your first client, can be very daunting. It’s nerve-wracking for a new business owner to even think about how they are going to be able to get their first client. Today, I am here to break down how you can get started on getting clients for your business today.

How to find clients

Share Your Business with Your Community

One of the first things you can do as a new business owner is to talk about your business! That’s right, start telling everyone about it. Your family, friends, hairdresser, personal trainer—even strangers on the bus. Let the whole world know about your great business adventure! How will people know if you don’t talk about it? Exciting news spreads fast, and your community would want to support you in your endeavors. So let your inner network support you and you could potentially get your first client! People trust people within their network, so they are more inclined to trust you and give you a chance as a new business owner.

Social Media

I’ve gotten a ton of my clients through social media, specifically Instagram as a virtual assistant. Now there are a ton of social media platforms nowadays, so the key is to prioritize marketing yourself on platforms where your audience, or niche, is spending the most time for your business. The top three social media platforms I get the most leads from are Instagram, Clubhouse, and Pinterest. However, I have clients that have had great success getting clients from Facebook and TikTok. It will depend on your audience and getting a clear understanding of which platforms they spend the most time on and then you’re able to spend your efforts on creating an active brand presence on those specific platforms.

Join Networking Groups

As an entrepreneur, I love being surrounded by other entrepreneurs! Not only do I work with them, but I love learning from them too. I find that the world of entrepreneurs can be so supportive and uplifting. We’re all trying to learn from each other and help each other succeed, so whether it’s a local community networking group or an online one, I highly recommend you join one.

I firmly believe you are who you surround yourself with and as an entrepreneur, you will always have things that you can learn from other people. I join these groups or communities because I want to learn and be a part of a network, but I find that I gain clients from them as well. At the end of the day, we all have knowledge, experiences, and skills that can help each other out.

Referrals

Word of mouth is the best way to grow a business.

It's more sustainable and successful to grow a business with long-term happy clients, than with short-term clients. Building trust in any relationship is key. If your existing clients trust you and are happy with your services, then they’ll gladly refer you to someone that requires your services. That new potential client already has some trust in you through the referral.

The great thing about referrals is that they come from people who know you, trust you, and like working with you; this means they can be more persuasive than a stranger trying to sell something over the phone or online.

As a new business owner, don’t worry about filling your client roster right away. That can be very overwhelming and stressful. All you need to start is that one client and I believe you can do it. If you have solutions to offer to someone’s problems, then you’ll get clients in no time. Believe in yourself and someone will believe in you.
